Collection: Robert Combas

The French figurative painter who broke the codes of contemporary art

Robert Combas is a French artist known for founding the Free Figurative movement, aesthetically close to Neo-Expressionism in the United States, as a counterweight to Minimalist and Conceptual art alongside Rémy Blanchard, François Boisrond, and Hervé Di Rosa in the late 1970s. Combas developed his figurative style by drawing inspiration from popular culture, graffiti, comics, and street art. His mix of raw lines and bold colors references Art Brut and the CoBrA movement, and resembles the pop graphic style of Keith Haring.

Born on May 25, 1957 in Lyon, Robert Combas studied art as a child and then enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts de Montpellier in 1975. He lives and works in Paris and continues to create his own style that provides visual commentary on contemporary society and its superficiality.
